Moored in Coasters Harbor, off Coaster's Harbor Island at Newport, Rhode Island, the U.S.S. *New Hampshire* was an older Navy vessel that by the 1890s was used to train apprentice seamen rather than to fight at sea. Newport's naval training station on the island drew a steady flow of recruits, and the harbor was a familiar sight to them. The Detroit Publishing Company sent photographers across the country to record rail lines, resorts and waterfronts, and these two nearly identical glass negatives, made before 1901, capture the harbor in that working era.
