Clifton House was a long-established hotel on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls, perched near the brink of the gorge and a fixture for tourists arriving by rail and steamer from both sides of the border. This glass negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the large body of news and feature pictures made by the Bain News Service in New York in the early twentieth century. The Bain photographers worked quickly and sold prints to newspapers, so their pictures often record everyday scenes of travel and leisure that were of wide public interest at the time. The title comes from caption information the service recorded, which the Library of Congress notes has not been independently verified, so the exact date and vantage point are best treated with some caution.
