A builder's name gives this view its particular interest: the negative is titled for the Harry Wardman Company and shows an old house at Water and M streets in Southwest Washington. Wardman was among the most active builders in the capital in the early 1900s, and the Southwest waterfront was then a dense, mixed neighborhood of older homes near the Potomac, much of which was cleared in the postwar redevelopment of the area. The National Photo Company made the glass plate sometime between 1918 and 1928, and the streaks and blotches across it come from the coating deteriorating over time rather than from the scene itself.
