The title points to a single rider, which sets this 1904 photogravure apart from the group scenes more common among horse subjects. The plate was made by Theodor and Oscar Hofmeister and appeared in the July 1904 issue of *Camera Work*, the journal Alfred Stieglitz edited to showcase pictorial photography from the Photo-Secession circle. Photogravure transfers a photograph onto a metal plate for intaglio printing, which gave such images soft tonal range and a hand-worked quality that suited the movement's aims. The record draws on an older caption card and has not been fully verified, so details of the rider and setting remain uncertain.
