A single figure, an Algerian horseman whose upturned gaze gives the sheet its title, anchors this drawing, which mixes charcoal, crayon, gouache, and graphite on a sheet about 41 by 33 centimeters. The record dates it only to a span between the 1840s and 1882, a period when France had been expanding its control over Algeria since 1830, and European artists of that time often drew North African riders as figures of exotic energy. The red stamp reading "Vente Paul Delamain" points to a sale of the drawing's earlier ownership, and a quick sketch of a horse's head on the back shows the artist working out the animal's form on the reverse.
