A carved wooden horseman, made by Senufo artists, is the subject of this 1953 color slide, one of several in the collection that record African sculpture from the early 1950s. The Senufo live across the savanna of northern Ivory Coast and neighboring areas, where woodcarving has long served community, ritual and display purposes. Horse and rider figures stand out among their work because the animal was relatively rare in much of the forest region and carried associations with prestige and the historic Sudanic states of the grasslands. The slide's "Sudan" label reflects the older European usage for the wider West African savanna, so the sculpture's exact origin may be broader than the title suggests.
