Four of the McAllister children are named on the back of this stereoscopic daguerreotype, which is dated to 1854 or 1855 and identifies them as children of W.Y. McAllister. Two lenses captured nearly identical views of the family, so that when the pair is viewed through a stereoscope the sitters seem to stand in depth. Daguerreotypes are unique positive images on silver-coated copper plates, and the stereo format was a popular way for families of the 1850s to record themselves. The Library of Congress acquired the plate in 1997.
