Four McAllister siblings sit together in this half-plate daguerreotype dated December 5, 1851, and labels attached to the case identify them as Lizzie, John, Annie, and Mitchell. The case has a mixed-flower design on the front framed by an oval, and the velvet lining is embossed with the name Root and an address at 140 Chestnut Street in Philadelphia. By the early 1850s, daguerreotypes like this were a popular way for families to record their children, and the sealed case protected the silvered plate from tarnish. The subject dates in the record place John's life between 1846 and 1863, so he would have been a young boy when this was made.
