Herbert Hoover is shown arriving at a station on February 19, 1929, a few weeks before he took the oath of office as the 31st president on March 4 of that year. The date places the image in the brief interval between his November 1928 election victory and his inauguration, when the president-elect was traveling and appearing in public more often. The negative is a glass plate from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented officials, events and street life in the capital during the early twentieth century. Visible streaks and blemishes on the glass come from the natural breakdown of its original coating.
