Here Herbert Hoover stands alongside Capt. Hugo Eckner, a German airship commander whose name the record's title gives as "Eichner." Eckner was a senior Zeppelin captain who commanded the Graf Zeppelin on its round-the-world flight in 1929, a voyage that drew wide attention in the American press. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio whose glass negatives recorded officials and visitors of the period. The date of 1929 is bracketed in the record, and the negative shows the streaks and blemishes common to glass plates whose coatings have deteriorated.
