Taken on August 29, 1929, this glass negative shows President Herbert Hoover with Dr. Hugo Eichner, only months into Hoover's term. The image comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., commercial studio that recorded officials, visitors and public events in the early twentieth century. Glass plates were the standard medium of the period and captured fine detail, but they are fragile. The record notes streaks and blemishes from deterioration of the original coating, which are worth looking past to see the composition beneath them.
