A flying visit" is a pun on the levitation illusions that Servais Le Roy, a Belgian-born magician born in 1865, performed in Britain around 1890. Posters like this one were pasted on hoardings and in shop windows to draw audiences to his shows. The piece was printed in color by Denmark Works, a London lithographic firm, and its bold, crowded style reflects how theatrical advertising was produced in that period. Note how the design promises a spectacle larger than the stage it was meant to fill.
