Harry Kellar, one of the best-known American magicians of the late 1800s, stars in this color lithograph captioned "Self decapitation," an illusion built on the promise of a head parted from its body. The poster was printed in 1898 by the Strobridge Lithograph Company, whose Cincinnati and New York offices produced many theatrical advertisements of the period. Kellar toured widely and later passed his stage career on to Harry Houdini, and posters like this one were meant to convey the scale and danger of his illusions to audiences before they bought a ticket.
