Harry Kellar's name is the first thing this sheet announces, and its subject list pairs him with the decapitation illusion, one of the most talked-about tricks of the stage era. Kellar, born in 1849, was among the leading American stage magicians of his day, touring with large illusions that relied as much on staging as on sleight of hand. Strobridge Lithographing Company, based in Cincinnati and New York, produced big color sheets like this one to advertise traveling shows, which were pasted on walls and fences along the route. At about seven feet tall, the poster was built to be read from across a street.
