Harry Kellar, one of the most celebrated American stage magicians of the late nineteenth century, is the figure at the center of this tall color lithograph, which was printed by the Strobridge Lithographing Company of Cincinnati and New York around 1897. The subject headings for the poster list decapitation illusions, a staple of the period's stage spectacle that drew crowds with its apparent danger and wonder. Strobridge was one of the leading poster printers of its day, and its large, vividly colored sheets were pasted on walls and hoardings to advertise touring shows, so the piece reflects how magic was sold to the public at the close of the century.
