This tall color lithograph, about 213 by 101 centimeters, presents Harry Kellar, one of the leading American stage magicians of the late 1800s, and its subject is levitation, the illusion for which his touring show was best known. The Strobridge Litho Company of Cincinnati and New York printed it in 1900, when theatrical posters like this one were a main way traveling entertainers advertised their shows in towns across the country. Strobridge was among the largest poster printers of that era, and its bold color work reflects how such advertising was designed to catch the eye of passersby. Kellar later passed his famous levitation act to Harry Houdini, which makes this poster a record of a moment in the rise of American stage magic.
