This large color lithograph advertises Harry Kellar, one of the most celebrated American stage magicians of the late 1800s, and its emphasis on levitation points to one of the illusions that made his name. Kellar, born in 1849, built a touring show that ran for decades and was known for elaborate stage effects. The poster was printed around 1900 by the Strobridge Lithographing Company, a Cincinnati firm with a New York office that produced many theatrical posters of the period. Its size, roughly seven feet tall, was meant to command attention on busy city walls and in theater lobbies.
