Few posters of the period were built on a single illusion as directly as this one, which puts the levitation at the center of the design. Harry Kellar, a leading American stage magician of the late 1800s, built his touring shows around large, theatrical effects, and this tall color lithograph, printed by the Strobridge Litho Company in Cincinnati and New York around 1900, is a typical example of how such effects were sold to audiences. Strobridge was one of the busiest theatrical poster houses of its era, supplying bold, eye-catching sheets to traveling performers. Its scale, at more than seven feet tall, was meant to be read from across a street.
