Demons and a grinning skeleton crowd this 1894 poster for Harry Kellar's cabinet mysteries, illusions in which a magician appeared to vanish, transform, or summon figures from within a small enclosed cabinet. Kellar, born in 1849, was one of the most celebrated American magicians of his day, and he toured widely with large productions that relied on spectacle as much as sleight of hand. The lithograph was produced by the Strobridge Lithographing Company, whose Cincinnati and New York shops turned out many of the bold, colorful theatrical posters of the period. Its lurid imagery reflects the public appetite for supernatural effects on stage in the 1890s.
