This poster presents Harry Kellar, one of the most celebrated American magicians of the late 19th century, and its subject is listed as levitation, the illusion that made his stage work famous. Strobridge Lithographing Company, a Cincinnati firm with a New York office, produced many color posters for touring theatrical attractions in this period, and this example shows the bold, crowded style of those advertisements. Kellar later passed his stage reputation to a younger protégé, Harry Houdini, who would become even more famous. The poster offers a useful view of how magic was marketed to American audiences in the 1890s.
