Harry Kellar, one of the best-known American stage magicians of the late 1800s, is the figure this tall poster advertises, and its subject headings also list demons, a reminder of how often nineteenth-century magic shows leaned on dramatic supernatural imagery. The color lithograph was printed by the Strobridge Litho Company, a Cincinnati firm that produced large theatrical posters for touring performers and companies. Its unusually narrow, tall format was built to catch attention on city billboards and theater fronts, where stage illusions were sold through bold graphics as much as through the performances themselves.
