Harry Kellar, one of the most celebrated stage magicians of the late nineteenth century, is the figure this tall lithograph is built around. The poster, produced by the Strobridge Lithographing Company of Cincinnati and New York around 1900, was designed to fill a city wall and draw crowds to his show with dramatic color and a sense of the marvelous. Kellar, who toured widely and eventually succeeded Alexander Herrmann as the leading American magician of his day, relied on posters like this to advertise illusions that promised the impossible. Posters of this scale and kind are valued today as examples of commercial lithography and as records of how traveling magic was sold to the public.
