Karachi, then the capital of the newly independent Pakistan, is the setting for this 1952 photograph of Eleanor Roosevelt during her trip through South Asia. Pakistan had gained independence in 1947, and Karachi was still its seat of government, so the visit placed a prominent American in a young nation's most important city. Roosevelt, the widow of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, was by then a leading figure in international affairs. She had chaired the commission that drafted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the United Nations in 1948. Her travels in these years often combined diplomacy with close attention to ordinary people's lives.
