Eleanor Roosevelt, widow of Franklin D. Roosevelt and a longtime figure in American public life, is pictured here with Gyalo Thondup, elder brother of the Dalai Lama of Tibet. The photograph dates from 1959, the year of the failed Tibetan uprising in Lhasa and the Dalai Lama's flight into exile in India. Thondup was active in efforts to draw international attention to Tibet's situation, and the meeting fits Roosevelt's long involvement with human rights, including her work on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights at the United Nations. The photograph was taken by Tommy Weber.
