Eleanor Roosevelt stands at the podium at the New York Coliseum, addressing a crowd while Lyndon B. Johnson, the Democratic vice presidential nominee, listens at right and Senator John F. Kennedy beams at the audience. The rally took place on November 5, 1960, three days before the presidential election. Mrs. Roosevelt, widow of Franklin D. Roosevelt, had been wary of Kennedy during the primaries but became one of his most visible supporters in the general campaign, helping the party win over liberal voters. Her place on the stage shows how Democrats were working to bring their factions together before the vote.
