Eleanor Roosevelt is shown in conversation with a woman machinist, a detail that sets this picture apart from the many images of her public appearances on the board. The photograph dates to November 1942, when Roosevelt made a goodwill tour of Great Britain while the country was deep into the war and its factories ran largely on women's labor after so many men had gone into the armed forces. Toni Frissell made the negative, and the picture later ran in Harper's Bazaar in February 1947, which helps explain its polished, documentary style. It shows how the war reshaped women's work and how a First Lady's visit could draw attention to it.
