Eleanor Roosevelt is shown rubbing noses with a Maori woman from New Zealand, a picture of the hongi, the traditional Maori greeting in which two people press their noses and foreheads together. The photo was made for *Look*, the large-circulation picture magazine that ran many images of visitors and cultural encounters in the years before the United States entered the Second World War. The photographer is not named, and the ca. 1940 date comes from an unverified caption card, so the exact occasion is uncertain. Even so, the image reflects the public's wide interest in the First Lady's personal contact with people from around the world.
