Eleanor Roosevelt, the wife of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, is the subject of this c1940 studio-style portrait, a photoprint made by the Washington firm Harris & Ewing, which was a major source of official and society portraits in the capital. By around 1940 she had become one of the most visible figures in American public life, known for her newspaper column, radio broadcasts, and frequent travel on behalf of the New Deal and wartime causes. The record is thin on details about the sitting itself, but the photograph reflects the formal portrait style that Washington studios produced for prominent officials and their families during these years.
