Eleanor Roosevelt is the subject here rather than her husband, which sets this portrait apart from the other pictures on the Franklin D. Roosevelt board. Her life reached well beyond the White House years: she served as First Lady from 1933 to 1945, a period in which she traveled widely, wrote a syndicated newspaper column, and pressed for civil rights, labor protections and refugee aid. After Franklin's death she became a delegate to the United Nations and chaired the commission that drafted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The caption card carries no date, so the exact occasion of the photograph is uncertain, but it is worth noticing how she was often pictured at public events and in her own right.
