Eleanor Roosevelt appears in this portrait, dated around 1932, the year her husband won the presidency and as she was building a public role of her own. The photograph comes from Underwood & Underwood, a New York firm known for stereoviews and press photographs in the early twentieth century. In those years, Eleanor's writing, speeches and advocacy were drawing growing national attention. Her later work as a United Nations delegate and a key figure in drafting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights secured her lasting reputation.
