Here Eleanor Roosevelt and Queen Elizabeth ride together in an automobile, leaving the railroad station for the White House, with an umbrella held up against the weather. The photograph dates from June 1939, when King George VI and Queen Elizabeth became the first reigning British monarchs to visit the United States, a trip meant to strengthen ties as war threatened in Europe. Mrs. Roosevelt, who escorted the couple from the station, played a central role in their stay, and pictures like this one show the friendly public face the visit was designed to present.
