Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt appear here as dinner guests at the White House on April 28, 1932, when Herbert Hoover was president and Franklin was governor of New York. That spring Roosevelt was already widely seen as a likely candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, which he won that summer in Chicago. The picture is a reminder that political rivals of the Depression years still shared social occasions, and that Eleanor Roosevelt was becoming a prominent public figure in her own right.
