Palm Beach, on Florida's southeast coast, is the setting, and the caption suggests the boats were photographed there around 1910. By then Henry Flagler's railroad had made the town a winter destination for wealthy northern visitors, and gasoline-powered launches were becoming a common sight on the Lake Worth lagoon between the barrier island and the mainland. The picture belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection of news photographs, and its title and details come from old caption cards that have not been independently verified.
