The moving assembly line is the idea most people associate with Ford Motor Company, and this print shows workers on that line in the 1910s, a decade when the company was reshaping how automobiles were built. Ford's Highland Park plant, which opened in 1910, adopted a conveyor-based system in 1913 that brought the work to each worker rather than having workers move around the car, sharply reducing the time needed to assemble a Model T. The record dates the photograph only to "ca. 191-," so its exact year is uncertain, but it reflects the repetitive, fast-paced labor that helped make the Model T affordable to a wide public. Worth noticing is how closely the workers are arranged along the line, a layout that was central to the company's production methods.
