Few scenes from the mid-1920s show the automobile's hold on Florida more plainly than a jam on one of the causeways leading out of Miami. This photograph, dated to about 1924, records that congestion during the state's land boom, when tourists and new residents were arriving by car in growing numbers. A causeway is a raised road across open water, so a single stalled vehicle could back up traffic for a long stretch. The picture is worth studying for the crowded line of cars and the flat, open setting around the roadway.
