Maxfield Parrish, years before he became the well-known painter of idealized landscapes and fantasy scenes, made this poster to advertise *Bolanyo*, a novel by the Chicago writer Opie Read. The book was issued by Way & Williams, the Chicago publisher named on the poster, and the design shows how publishers in the 1890s used bold illustrated posters to sell new fiction. The 1897 date comes from an old caption card, so it should be treated as approximate.
