Chicago, as it was" is a hand-colored Currier & Ives lithograph published in New York, and its title invites the viewer to compare the city shown with the one that followed. Chicago grew from a small lake port into a major rail and grain center within a few decades, and the Great Fire of 1871 destroyed much of its core, so a retrospective view of the city speaks to how quickly it changed. The print is catalogued as number 1124 in the firm's catalog raisonné and was later included in an exhibition on the garment industry and American Jewry.
