Chicago's baseball club is the subject of this color lithograph poster, which proclaims the city's team as national champions. The record dates it only tentatively to about 1876, the year the Chicago White Stockings won the first National League pennant. The printer, J.S. Thompson & Co., operated from the Times Building on Fifth Avenue in Chicago. Posters like this one were part of how the city promoted its teams and its rising reputation in the 1870s.
