The sitter here is Aaron S. Kreider of Pennsylvania, though the name comes from data the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve and has not been independently verified. The company was a commercial studio in Washington, D.C., that made portraits and documented people and events for a wide clientele in the early twentieth century. This small glass negative, dated to about 1921 from others in its range, was given to the Library of Congress by Herbert A. French in 1947. Visible streaks and blemishes come from the natural breakdown of the original coating, so the image's surface shows its age as much as its subject.
