Annapolis, Maryland, home of the United States Naval Academy, is the setting here, and the poster's subject is the academy's football players in the early 1900s. Andrew B. Graham, a Washington, D.C. firm, produced the piece as a color photo-lithograph in 1902, a process that let printers reproduce photographs in multiple colors for posters. Football was then rising fast on American campuses and in military academies, and its violence drew public alarm by 1905, which led to rule changes. A poster like this one shows how athletics was being promoted and displayed at the time.
