Advertising a San Francisco staging of Charles Dickens's *The Cricket on the Hearth*, this 1936 silkscreen poster was produced by the Federal theater Project, a branch of the Works Progress Administration that brought professional stage work to audiences who could rarely afford a ticket. Dickens published the sentimental tale in 1845 as one of his Christmas books, and its story of a humble household warmed by a cricket's chirp made it a natural fit for holiday audiences. WPA posters like this one were printed in bold flat color by silkscreen, a method well suited to the large runs the program needed.
