*Charles C. Stewart's Habit* is the title across this 1937 silkscreen poster, which advertised a California stage production sponsored by the Federal theater Project. Under the Works Progress Administration, that project gave out-of-work actors, writers and designers jobs from 1935 until Congress ended its funding in 1939, and it staged plays in California as well as elsewhere. WPA poster artists favored silkscreen because it was inexpensive and produced bold, flat color that read well from a street or a shop window.
