This 1936 silkscreen poster is one of the Federal theater Project's advertisements for an adaptation of Charles Dickens's novella *The Cricket on the Hearth*, staged in San Francisco. Its six-part layout, with twelve slides read from top left to bottom right, was a common format for WPA theater posters, which had to convey a production's story and cast in a single printed sheet. The Federal theater Project, a New Deal program that employed actors, designers and writers during the Depression, mounted low-cost plays for public audiences across the country. Its poster artists often worked in bold, flat color, as this one does, so that the work could be printed cheaply and displayed widely.
