Most posters in this collection advertise plays, concerts, or exhibitions, but this one stands apart as a silkscreen advertisement for *Habit*, a Federal theater Project production in California in 1937. The Federal theater Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, put unemployed actors, directors, and stage crews back to work from 1935 until Congress ended it in 1939. Its California units produced plays for local audiences, and their posters were often made with silkscreen, a method that let artists use flat, bold areas of color that were cheap to print in quantity. The poster's artist, Charles C. Stewart, worked within that style, which was built for quick reading from a street corner or a shop window.
