A 1936 silkscreen poster from the Works Progress Administration's federal art program announces free health education classes in New York City, sponsored by the Board of Education's adult education division. Its course list is the real draw: it runs from "Everyday problems in healthful living" and "Family health and family recreation" to "First aid," "Camp counselors," and "Hygiene of beauty." Posters like this one were part of a broader effort during the Depression to give working adults practical skills and public health knowledge at little or no cost.
