The title names Edith Cavell, the British nurse shot by a German firing squad in Brussels on October 12, 1915, and this color lithograph commemorates her death. Cavell had run a nursing school in occupied Belgium and had helped Allied soldiers and civilians escape to the neutral Netherlands. Her execution caused an outcry across Europe and in the United States, and it became a powerful symbol in Allied war propaganda. The angels in the design, a common motif in wartime memorial art, cast her as a martyr rather than a soldier.
