Guttenberg, a German-settled river town in Clayton County on the upper Mississippi, took its name from Johannes Gutenberg, the printing pioneer. In 1869 its fortunes rested on the river, where steamboats and barges carried grain, lumber and farm produce to larger markets downstream, and the landing and warehouses formed the commercial heart of town. German families kept their language, churches and social societies alive, while farm settlement spread across the bluffs and prairie behind the town after the Civil War. Residents would have known Guttenberg as a dependable river port and a community of merchants, artisans and farmers, one of many small Mississippi towns whose growth depended on the water.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Guttenberg, Iowa, drawn in 1869. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
