McGregor, Iowa, in 1869 was a river town on the east bank of the Mississippi in Clayton County, shaped by steamboat traffic and the lumber trade that moved down the upper river from the northern pineries. Its landing and warehouses handled freight bound for markets to the south, and the blufflands behind the streets gave the town a narrow, stacked layout that a bird's-eye view handles well. Residents had lived through the Civil War only a few years earlier and were rebuilding commerce and civic life in the postwar years, with churches, schools, and merchant blocks filling the lots near Main Street. A map drawn at this moment records a community still defined by the river, before railroads reshaped how goods and people moved through northeast Iowa.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of McGregor, Iowa, drawn in 1869. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders.
