Boone, Iowa, in 1868 was a young railroad town on the Des Moines River in Boone County, and this bird's-eye view shows a place still taking shape. It was still known by the name Montana when the view was drawn, a name it would soon give up. The Chicago and North Western line had reached the area in the mid-1860s, and the railroad moved grain, livestock, and lumber in and out, making the town a trading point for surrounding farms. Settlers from across the county came in for supplies and services, and the churches and schools forming around the streets marked a community that had grown from open prairie within a few years.
