In 1868 Iowa City was a college town that had been the state capital from 1846 until the seat moved to Des Moines in 1857. The State University of Iowa, chartered in 1847, shaped its social life, with students and professors sharing streets with merchants and lawyers. Rail lines that reached the town in the 1850s connected its grain and lumber to eastern markets, while the Iowa River supplied water power for mills along its banks. Residents knew the town for its Old Capitol and its university, and the map shows those landmarks at the center of a community adjusting to the loss of state government.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Iowa City, Iowa, drawn in 1868. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
